2nd Lt David Harry Johnstone, Hertfordshire Regiment, was the son of D. Y. Johnstone. He was born in 1881, and educated at Marlborough College.
Lieutenant Johnstone was an accomplished musican. After leaving school he studied at the Royal College of Music. He was one of the first violins in the Royal Amateur Orchestral Society, and was also a brilliant pianist. Several of his compositions were published in the Stock Exchange Annual.
He was in partnership with his father on the Stock Exchange, having become a member in 1904.
On the outbreak of war he enlisted in the Anti-Aircraft Corps, and later was given a commission in the Hertfordshire Regiment. He had only just joined his regiment when he developed influenza, from which he died on 2 August 1916.
