2nd Lt Vincent M'Namara - Royal Engineers
136 Fortress Company, 13th Division, 8th Army Corps, BEF, died 29 November 1915, aged 24, from the effects of the gas fumes of a mine which he had just exploded under the Turkish lines, the results of which he went to investigate.
He was born April 11 1891, Son of Patrick Joseph and Margaret McNamara (nee O'Connell), of "Analore," Castle Rd., Blackrock, Co. Cork. Educated at Brothers College, Cork and then Cork University as an engineering student.
He went to the front attached to the Mining Company in September 1915 where he had two months of mining and counter-mining close to the enemy, before he was killed.
He was a scrum-foot for, first, the Christian College pack and then that of University College and of Munster. He played 72 times for his College. In 1914 he had three International Caps.
He played in the last International against England at Twickenham February 14 1914, which England won 17 -12.
A. L Harrison, England's only new cap in this match, was awarded a posthumous V.C. for his actions at the blocking of Zeebrugge 1918.
