The story behind the image: Alf was one of only 160 survivors from 800 brave men in his battalion who went over the top

8th Battalion Royal Fusiliers war diary describes the events of that day: ......"With gallant courage the colonel (Lt-Col. Albemarle Cator Annesley DSO) led the attack and waving his stick, he shouted the familier words of encouragement of a field day......suffering heavy casualties, few officers were left but the men (were) gallantly led by their NCOs.....Six officers were killed and 17 others wounded...."

“The Bn went into action about 800 strong and came out 160 strong" [Alf was one of those survivors]

Colonel Annesley died that evening, after being wounded four times whilst leading his men.

Alf lived for another 79 years and died in 1995 aged 97.
